Second BCS Bowl Bid for the Big Ten – Iowa or Penn State?

Posted by Berto On November - 25 - 2009

Despite Ohio State’s near-lock for the Rose Bowl (assuming there’s no 2007-style nuclear meltdown that somehow puts them in the BCS National Championship Game so that they can get creamed again), there’s a lot of questions circling the Big Ten, and whether or not the conference will get a second BCS Bowl Bid.

Let’s say the Big Ten gets a second bid. The question comes down to who gets to go – Iowa or Penn State?

Personally, I believe Iowa deserves to go — hands down. They beat a bowl bound Big 12 team in Iowa State on the road and a solid PAC-10 Arizona by double digits. Additionally, they beat Penn State by a double digit margin, won at Michigan State, and won at Wisconsin.

Penn State played Sisters of the Poor four times in their out of conference games, and lost to the two best teams they played at home by double digits: Ohio State and Iowa.

Iowa should and probably will get the nod to the Fiesta Bowl. They are easily a top-10 traveling team, and their fans will dominate the Arizona Valley area. Plus, you know that Ferentz will bring it in his bowl game, as always. Iowa’s fanbase in the midwest covers a great deal of geographical territory, too.

Penn State, meanwhile, proved nothing more than the fact that they can beat mediocre teams this year, and is off to the Capital One Bowl against a team like Ole Miss.
